A boy who falls in with a criminal gang, a tailor who risks his life when he accepts a job from the competitors, or two childish guys that want to become gangsters. These are some examples from five different stories that take place at Gomorrah, a movie released last week based on the controversial bestselling novel of the same name by mafia victim Roberto Saviano.
This is a crime film directed by Matteo Garrone that deals with organized crime, especially with the powerful Neapolitan Camorra and how that affects life of residents from Naples and Caserta. They have practically no choice, and they are forced everyday to obey the peculiar rules of the “System”. In fact, since the book came out, Saviano has been threatened by some of the mafia capos that were bravely denounced throughout the novel. Consequently, even if the Italian Minister of the Interior granted him a permanent police escort, Saviano decided to leave Italy and move to EEUU. Nevertheless, his courage in writing the book and continuing to denounce the Camorra on television and in newspaper articles has seen him hailed as a national hero. On the contrary, his counterpart, the film-director Matteo Garrone, isn’t afraid for his life, because gangsters are proud of being represented in the film.
Since its release, this tough-to-see film has received positive reviews from all over the world. Moreover, the movie was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and it also won the Grand Prix at one the most important festivals, the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. Because of that, the movie has been chosen by National Association of Cinemagraphic Industries to represent Italy in the 81st Academic Awards.
Whatever happens, the experts conclude that one of the strengths from the book, and from the film too, is that there is no chance for that people, and they know it.
Para que luego digan que los italianos no son sexys...
EN: Italian guys: so zexy....
